Its more than a matter of hooking up wires. You need to set protocols and gateways etc. Here is a site that gives the basics.

Read this detailed Ethernet home network setup tutorial, you will be able to build your own network after reading it:

Have fun.. :o)
This could actually be a setting with youre ISP and the router / modem config. If you use verizon and you do not have the PPPoE connection (or their special DHCP connection) setup correctly in the router settings, only one pc will connect at a time. If you have cable, did you make sure the ISP (comcast, earthlink...ect) has the MAC address to the router? If not, that could be causeing the issue as well.

Good luck ....
first make sure that they are hooked up the right way if they are and they still dont work then maybe you should call your local cable co or who ever is your internet carrier.

I've been there and done that

good luck
Better follow the manual step by step. You should first connect 1 PC to the router to properly configure it. Once router configuration is complete and PC is fully functional on the internet, only then should you start configuring the laptop to connect to the router (using Network Connection in Control Panel).
