I was hoping to connec two computers together using an ethernet cable. Do I really need a router, witch, or any wireless device. Or is an ethernet cable good enough. Both the computers have ethernet ports at the back.

You can use a crossover cable, make them in the same workgroup and assign ip addresses to them like 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 with 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask.
