Reconnecting Access database server to client computers on a network?

Dear all, there are 4 client computers which were once connected to an Access database server through a network. However, when the server became old enough we can not connect latest computers to the server. Upgrading the server is not possible as it has very small space. Otherwise, how I could transfer 102 Megabyte Access database to a modern server without losing data entry forms?

Check your licencing, this may be you don't have enough for the number of licences you are allowed. To move the database you should only have to copy it entirely to the new machine. Unfortunately it does not scale well, I have found it becomes very slow and a bit unpredictable with more than 7 or 8 machines and fairly large amounts of data when run remotely.

Yes this is possible. You say your computers are already networked together. On any file or folder or hardware device(printer) that you would like to share, copy it over to your shared folder which you should see if you go into my computer, you should see ''Shared Documents'' if its not there then it will be under c:\documents and settings\your profile name\shared documents

Remove the HDD. Memory Modules, get all of your saftey gear on and smash them into little pieces. On the HDD you can remove the Platter/disks and you do not have to actually destroy the case. Then remove the CMOS battery, and take all to a certified Recycleing outfit.

Now the trick, take 1/3rd of the parts and pieces to that place every week for 2 weeks, the other week you dont need because you tossed that in a dumpster on the way.

Normally you can just reformat your hard drive to erase the dsts on the disk(s). However, there are methods to recover info from a reformatted hard drive. If you really want to wipe your hard drive clean, you can use this free utility.

Alternatively, set-up the game as a LAN game. You could be setting the game up as an Internet game. Since you are sharing the same connection to the 'net, the connection fails.

Generally, if you're setting-up an 'net game, you can ONLY play on-line. Most games will NOT accept both LAN and internet game connections.
I doubt the router has anyting to do with it.

If you're using wireless, it might be the quality of the wireless connection.

If both computers are wired into the router and it still doesn't work, then it is likely in the software setup of one of the computers.

I was going to build a computer just for the experience of it and then realized that I wouldn't save any money (or at least not much) because the cost of computers and the items that go in them has dropped so much that it just isn't worth it. IF you want to really do this then I suggest that you really specialize in just one particular thing, like audio recording, or something like that. (Audio recording has special needs when done with computers, like the hard drives should be at least 7,200 rpm, the RAM should be maximum, the audio noise caused by the computer has to be minimized or eliminated --- this kind of thing --- then you might have a viable business.)

Not sure how you can say you bought 3 computers without towers. A tower IS the computer. But anyway, IF you have the towers, box's or whatever, you can hook them all up either wired (ehternet) and run the others as an intranet system or wireless and set your main comp to share its resources.

If you don't have the computer itself, you only have a monitor and a keyboard it can still be done but you are going to need some serious IT help to set up some slave units.

Go to my computer and then click on your main hard drive. It is most likely named C:\ or Local Disk. If you want to go into saved files, go to doccuments and settings. For programming files for a given application, go into program files. Everything else is more or less self explanitory.

Hi, actually it is not as easy as what you think. The term of what we're speak here is called Clustering. You should run at least a Server Operating System (OS) either Unix/Linux or Windows. For Windows at least WindowsNT4.0 or now Win2K or Win2K3 and install another server application name: MTS (Microsoft Transaction Server). As the name, you could imagine how expensive the licenses cost would be. Even though for Linux/Unix, it's somehow not really ''free''. The installation of the cluster system can be troublesome for some newbie. Even one with experience in OS doesn't really mean he/she is able to configure the cluster. Trust me :)

But if you want to learn about it, try to start use search engine and looking for keyword: Clustering Linux Windows Howto

Later on, when you've become expert in this cluster, you have a value because not many people are expert in this fields.

Many of the ones you refer to have been turned in for problems and there are technicians who repair them then the companies try to resell them. If you are thinking of buying one be certain it has a good warranty. I have read of several people who had good luck with rebuilt PC's and even laptops!
Sometimes people take their computer to get fixed, and then decide they want a new one.. so the company completely refurbishes that computer and sells it cheaper, althought it is almost as good as new..

I bought two, from Dell, and never have had any problems.

It's hard to say. Yes, the first computer has more and would ''last longer'' ... The 2nd machine is fine and all the specs will keep you running for quite some time.

Either will allow you for the mulitasking and general usage. If you wanted to get into gaming then that opens up another issue of the video card. The higher end games will require a beefier video card.

For the price, I would say the first machine would do you best all around.

I'm sorry to say this but all of them are very, very bad. The notbooks themselves are old as well as the hardware in them (which are the parts of the computer). The best one out of the six is the fifth one. The Sony Vaio PCG-7F1L Notebook. However, it is still not a good choice. You can get a new notbook that is 10 times better if you are willing to pay a little more money, which I strongly recomend. However, it all depends on what you are going to use the computer for. For example, if you are going to only use it for typing on word, and simple internet browsing then the notebooks you list (especially the 5th one) are fine. Also, if you prefer a mac more than a pc then the first one on your list, the Apple iBook 12'' is the best.

The wireless cards go in the computers. Windows will either install them automatically or ask for a disk. If you need to install using the disk then just pop it in to your drive.

First step would be make sure you have a wireless router. Then make sure the wireless router is configured to broadcast. This will depend on what type of router you have most ppl buy linksys or dlink and it will tell you exactly how to connect to and configure the router. after that is set up you have to get on each computer and double click you wireless card icon which is usually down near you clock. this will allow you to browse for nearby networks then just connect to yours. If you are interested in file sharing make you will need to make sure both machines are on the dame workgroup.
Assuming you already have the wireless network up and running, you can purchase wireless network cards and install them in the computer OR (I prefer) purchasing 2 wireless network Adapters.

They are easier and less work. Just install the driver and plug the adapter into your USB port. Enter your SSID into the adapter and your done.

If WPA or WEP security is being used on the wireless router, then you will need to enter that encryption code into the adapter also...

Personaly I'd not choose any of those laptops. I'd go with a macbook. But out of those 4 I'd say go with the compaq. They have proven to have less problems with them and they tend to last longer as well. But macbook's still rule.
Of the ones listed, I would go in this order:

1) Toshiba - consistently ranked high in all reviews/reports

2) HP - typically medium to higher end components, although they do offer low end models

3) Dell - all around OK. If purchasing for a college student, then absolutely get the accidental damage protection. It si worth it. You can basically toss out a building and they will send you a new one.

4) Compaq - although owned by HP, the Compaq line is typically lower end. If you can get it cheap, then it is probably OK for a couple of years - don;t expect much out of it.

You didn't mention Acer - which is now the 4th largest PC manufacturer in the world. When they started out, they were bascially a ''no name'' brand.

Networking your computers will not accomplish this. Of course, unless all three are identical, you couldn't accomplish this anyway. To be honest, I don't think this is possible even if everything was the same... The game/program will look to the LOCAL machine for it's hardware (video, ram, etc). Drives are a slightly different issue because you could share drives with networking.

The closest you could come would be to run remote desktops or virtual machines on the computers, and then you are not actually doing what you want anyway.

There are programs that will let you use the computing power of networked processors, but there no games that I am aware of that support this (someone correct me if I am wrong)....

Unfortunately, no. There's ways to network the computers together to play multiplayer games or even to share a printer, even a drive. RAM is motherboard specific. You can install multiple video cards but even that can lead to headaches.

At a guess, it may be because you need to have 2 copies of the game. If you've illegally installed the same copy twice then it won't work.

You do not necesarlly need two wireless cards, but you will need a wireless router.

Hook your dsl modem to the in port(wan) on the router, then run a cable from the router to the PC it is next to.

Setup your router, and then the other computer(the one with the wireless card) can connect to the internet.

You have to take in less calories than you burn. I know you said you hate to exercise, but there are things you can do that won't seem like much exercise once you make the habit. The simplest solution is to get a wired router with a built in switch. The router will have a WAN port - the cable modem gets connected to this port. It will also have 4 or 8 LAN ports, depending on the model router you buy - the computers get connected the LAN ports. Assuming your cable company assigns an address by DHCP, you'll just have to make these wired connections, then shut all the devices down - cable modem, router, and computers - for about 1 minute, then turn them on in order - first the cable modem (should take anywhere from 15 seconds to 1 minute) then the router, then the PCs. Make sure you go into the router per the user manual it comes with, and set a password for the administrator account, to prevent easy access to your PCs from the outside.

It depends on your router. For example, I have a MOTOROLA SBG900. It has 1 ethernet %26 1 usb. However, it doesn't allow for both of them to be used. It's either one or the other. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same for your modem brand. What you'll have to do is buy yourself a router with at least 4 ports. 1 port will go to your modem. The rest of the ports you can use for your pcs.

One. You'll need to make sure the cable is a crossover calbe, not a straight through.

Hook the cable into both computers NIC(Network Card).

You'll need to set IP's for this to work well.

Open the NIC properties on both computer. Set one PC to(these are the ones I use...easier that way) 123.45.67.89 and the other one to 123.45.67.90.

Set the default gateway on both machines to 123.45.67.1

And set the network mask to 255.255.255.0.

Next right click on My Computer on both computers and click on Computer Name. Make sure both computers have the same name listed in the workgroup. If you change it, you'll need to reboot.

Next is to share a folder, or folders on both computers. It may take a bit for each computer to recognize the other.

You can use anything your computer has room for. You should experiment, and have fun. If something doesn't work all you have to do is unplug the computer and take it out. You can't really mess anything up. Experimentation is the best way to learn.

no. the rule is you can only use 1 part from 1 computer in another computer. since you have already used the ram, that counts as the 1 part.
You can use RAM, Hard Disk, and graphics card. Thats pretty much it when it comes to mixing two computers.
Sure, set the drives jumpers to slave and through it in and use it for additional storage. You can also use a cd/dvd rom/burner if you want an extra in this machine, also the video card if you want to set up dual monitors
This all depends on the motherboard capabilities of the system you are using as well as the compatibility of the parts you are trying to install. As long as the hard drive that you want to stick into your computer is a Serial ATA drive (most are) and your system supports that style of drive, you should have no problems. Additionally, you should be able to use any of the ''cards'' from your old computer so long as the one you are using has open slots. This might allow you to have additional USB ports, monitors hooked up, or whatever other capabilities your old system had.

this is not the same as a standard ethernet cable

connect the two pc.s via the ethernet ports

on pc1

open view network connections and select the local area connection

scroll down the list to tcp/ip and select use the following ip address

enter 192.168.0.1

do the same with pc2 and enter 192.168.0.2

also make sure that both pc.s are part of the same workgroup (goto control panel - system- computer name - change workgroup name if neccessary)

to check that all is fine ping each machine from the other- start- run- type at the prompt: ping 192.168.0.2 to ping pc2 from pc1)

if this fails turn off firewalls

now you need to allow files to be shared (using my computer- go to the files and right click on them- select sharing and security- share this file on the network- tell any warnings and wizzards to sod off)
