Losing files when using external hard drive on two different computers?

I'm trying to put files from my home computer onto my external hard drive and then use it from a different computer, but after I plug my drive into the second computer the new files dissappear from the drive, and I can't get them from either of my computers after that.

I think they're still on there, because there's unaccounted space taken up that's the same size of what extra should be on there, but nothing's showing up when I try to get hidden folders to appear.

Is there anything I can do to get my files to appear?

Yes, I would go back to the first computer and look for the files.

If they still remains hidden then use a recovery software (such as undelete) to recover the file.

I never experience such a thing even when connecting drives to OSX and then back to Windows. But I think that one of the 2 PCs as a problem with the drive (it may need drivers or additional software to work).

Go to a DOS prompt and change drive letter to whatever you external HDD is e.g. L and issue this command:-

L:\%26gt; dir a:h

See if it displays any hidden files.

I suspect that this is a permissions thing. You may need to check the security of the folders on the HDD and acquire owbership of the files before they are accessible.

If you are using Windows XP Home edition then you will have to reboot into safe mode and login as the Administrator.
What you are experencing is a permissions problem.

On the second computer right click on the drive from my computer, go to properties, then Security.

Add the Administrator and your user id to the secutity of the drive. You may have to take possession of the complete drive to add users from another domain to the drive. If you do have to take possession remember to reverse it when you connect it to the orginal computer.

If you had a small domain you would not have the secruity problems.
